Abstract

Tooth colored abutment is a demand of patients and clinicians in implant dentistry recently. With the introduction of zirconia implant abutment can be one of the solutions for this purpose. Even though zirconia has high flexural strength and fracture toughness, its long-term clinical performance is scarce in the literature. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect fatigue loads on screw loosening and fracture strengh of titanium and alumina toughened zirconia abutment under dry and wet condition. Specimens were divided into three groups. Five titanium and ten alumina toughened zirconia abutments were tightened with titanium abutment screws with a touque force of 30Ncm initially. Five titanium and alumina toughened zirconia abutments were received 1,000,000 fatigue loads with a magnitude of 300N at an angle of 30 degree under the dry condition. The frequency of load was 14Hz. Another 5 alumina toughened zirconia abutment were loaded under 100% humid condition. After fatigue loads, the detorque value was recorded for all 15 abutments to calculate the effect of fatigue load and water. Finally to compare the effects of low temperature degradation affected by loads and water, Fracture srength of alumina toughened zirconia abutment was measured and compared. Statistical analysis was performed at the significance level of <0.05. Screw loosening of titanium and alumina toughened zirconia abutment under dry condition were 10.2 + 1.6 Ncm and 9.5 + 1.8 Ncm respectively. Screw loosening of alumina toughened zirconia abutment under wet condition was 9.3 + 1.5 Ncm. There was no significance difference statistically among three groups in screw loosening. The fracture strength of alumina toughened zirconia abutment under dry and wet condition were 666.4 + 68.5 N and 704.6 + 107.7 N respectively. There was no significant difference between alumina toughened abutment after applying fatigue loads under dry and wet conditions. The alumina toughened zirconia abutments were stable after fatigue loads under wet condition and showed comparable screw loosening value those of titanium and alumina toughened zirconia abutments under dry condition.
